Released in 1956, The Bad Seed remains one of the most influential psychological thrillers ever produced and one of the definitive "killer kid" movies. Adapted from Maxwell Anderson’s hit Broadway play, itself based on William March's bestselling novel, the film shocked audiences with its unsettling premise: what if an innocent-looking little girl were capable of cold, calculated murder? At a time when childhood was generally portrayed onscreen as the ideal of purity and optimism, The Bad Seed dared to suggest that evil could wear pigtails, polished shoes, and perfect manners.

One of the film's greatest strengths is its remarkable cast, much of which was imported directly from the Broadway production. Nancy Kelly recreates her Tony Award-winning performance as Christine Penmark, the increasingly terrified mother who slowly realizes the horrifying truth about her daughter. Patty McCormack reprises her stage role as Rhoda Penmark, combining angelic sweetness with icy calculation in a performance that also earned her an Academy Award nomination.

Also returning from Broadway were Eileen Heckart as the grief-stricken Hortense Daigle, Evelyn Varden as Monica Breedlove, Henry Jones as the doomed handyman Leroy, and Joan Croydon as Miss Fern, retaining the theatrical chemistry and lived-in performances made the play such a success.

Vital to the film's success was director Mervyn LeRoy, one of Hollywood's finest craftsmen best known for classics such as Little Caesar and Quo Vadis. LeRoy translated Anderson's stage-bound drama into compelling cinema without sacrificing its claustrophobic intensity. Despite restrictions imposed by the Production Code, which required a quote/unquote “more morally acceptable ending,” LeRoy preserved the story's disturbing psychological impact.

The Bad Seed established many of the conventions of the "killer kid" subgenre, paving the way for films such as Devil Times Five, Who Can Kill a Child?, Bloody Birthday, Village of the Damned, Orphan, The Good Son, and numerous variations on the theme. 70 years on, Rhoda Penmark remains one of horror's most unforgettable villains, proving that terror does not always come from misshapen monsters or masked psychos lurking in the shadows. Sometimes it comes from a little girl... asking for a basket of kisses.
