SHIVERS (1975) d. David Cronenberg (Canada)
1975’s Shivers aka They Came from Within is a wonderfully squirmy milestone in Canadian horror cinema... and horror cinema in general, in that it announced writer/director David Cronenberg to moviegoers everywhere, and the world has never been the same since.
As the Starliner high-rise residence is thrown into chaos when a strange parasite starts turning tenants into uninhibited, sex-crazy versions of themselves, Shivers introduces many of the themes that Cronenberg would revisit time and again during his half-century behind the camera: disease, transformation, technology, sexuality, identity, science, ethics, isolation.
Not bad for a low-budget exploitation movie that also could be described as “sex slugs take over the world.”
Adding to the film’s cult appeal, we have Ivan Reitman (Stripes, Kindergarten Cop, Ghostbusters), serving as producer, with horror legends Barbara Steele (Black Sunday) and Lynn Lowry (The Crazies) delivering a perfect pair of off-kilter performances, and a slew of gloriously gooey low-fi practical effects by makeup maestro Joe Blasco.
Being partially government-funded, Shivers stirred up major controversy in Canada, but the moral outrage only increased its notoriety and box office returns. And, over the past 50 years, the film has been reappraised as a smart, subversive mini-classic that deftly mixes horror, humor, and social commentary.
Join AC and his awesome panel of guests (Emily Barney, Jason Coffman, Kate Hansen, John McDevitt, Cullen Wade) as we revisit Shivers, dissect its legacy, and celebrate one of the most bizarre and brilliant debuts in horror history!
