Revenant, The (2009) (1st viewing) d. Prior, Kerry (USA) 118 min.
Not-bad little award-winning zombie comedy, with solid dialogue, relationships and splatter. Got it from the RedBox based on a rec. from my roommate Bryant. Shades of
Dead Heat as far as undead buddy comedies go. At two hours, maybe a shade longer than it needed to be for what it is.
Beware! Children at Play (1989) (1st viewing) d. Cribben, Mik (USA) 97 min.
My buddy Patrick picked this disc up 15 years ago when he was doing some volunteer work for Troma (is there any other kind?) and eventually gave it to me unwatched. I then hung onto it for the next 10 years, again, not watching it because a) I’d never heard anyone talk about it when killer kid flicks came up and b) its terrible title. Well, I’m here to tell you, this movie is plenty good no-budget fun, with some awesome DIY gore effects and a grand taboo-smashing finale that will knock you out with its gleeful audaciousness.
Ghost Town (1988) (1st viewing) d. Governor, Richard (USA) 85 min.
Fun little Empire flick that I acquired from my buddy Gert while out in Brussels earlier this year (you’ll be seeing a bunch of these titles popping up over the course of the next 31 days). Enjoyably spirited (HA HA) Western ghost fantasy with some nice practical effects and makeup.
Vindicator, The (1986) (1st viewing) d. Lord, Jean-Claude (Canada) 93 min.
Another Gert rec. Evil corporate scientist tries to kill off his colleague, then decides to use his body as part of his new cybernetics experiment. Of course, he doesn’t count on the “corpse” retaining its memories and having a will of its own, or he probably wouldn’t have created an unstoppable killing machine. Predates Paul Verhoeven’s oh-so-similarly-themed
RoboCop by a full year. Interesting, no?
