Welcome to Episode #7 of THE STACK!

Tonight, we'll take a look at Severin Films' new 4K UHD Blu-ray release (4 discs!) of Jess Franco's attempt to bring the most faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel to the screen... and it's not too bad! Starring Christopher Lee, Herbert Lom, Klaus Kinski, Maria Rohm, Soledad Miranda, Jack Taylor, Paul Muller, and Fred Williams, this handsome production is given the five-star treatment from Severin, with oodles of special features, documentaries, soundtrack CD, etc.

WAX (2014) movie review

On the one hand, this love letter to horror cinema delivers several cult figure cameos (Tombs of the Blind Dead’s Lone Fleming, Paul Naschy’s voice), some gooey eviscerations, and a welcome scenery-and-flesh-chewing showcase for Spanish horror icon Jack Taylor (gussied up as Vincent Price in House of Wax). The rest of the time, however, we’re trapped with smart aleck Jimmy Shaw (working his Brad Dourif features overtime) wandering around a supposedly haunted wax museum – where he has been challenged to remain until dawn – with an array of videocameras recording every snoozy, snarky move he makes.

After U.S. Forces drop a bomb into the Atlantic during a training exercise off the coast of Portugal, a giant slumbering sea serpent is awakened from its centuries-long slumber. Mayhem and hilarity ensue. The only thing faker than the titular menace, which rivals Reptilicus for sheer goofy monster puppetry, are the horrendous acting stylings of garishly miscast WASP Timothy Bottoms as a crusty sea salt tough guy captain (named Pedro, no less!) and Taryn Power’s fetching socialite, whose facial expressions upon seeing her American friend gobbled up resemble that of a heartburn sufferer.
