40 YEARS OF DAY OF THE DEAD (1985): THE ROMERO ZOMBIE CLASSIC!

DAY OF THE DEAD (1985) d. George A. Romero (USA)

Following up one of the biggest worldwide horror sensations was no easy feat for writer/director George A. Romero. When the sequel to Night of the Living Dead, 1978’s Dawn of the Dead, turned out to be even more successful and arguably just as influential, other doors opened for the horror icon. But when it came to concluding his zombie opus, budget limitations forced him to scale back his original vision for what would ultimately come to be known as Day of the Dead.

Fans and critics were initially disappointed at this chapter’s darker, more contained view of the undead Armageddon, as the director continues his theme that, though the zombie hordes are an undeniable threat, the real danger stems from the surviving humans inability to trust each other and work, and live, together.

That said, Tom Savini’s jaw-dropping effects were universally recognized as astonishing high-water marks, and though critics and fans were put off by the unpleasant, violent, insane characters populating this world, Romero’s cast delivers unforgettable performances, from Lori Cardille's resilient heroine to Joseph Pilato's authoritarian Capt. Rhodes to Richard Liberty's twitchy genius Dr. “Frankenstein” Logan to Howard Sherman's quintessential turn as the undead honor roll student Bub.

Long looked upon as Night and Dawn’s poor relation, time and context have been kind to Day of the Dead, which has now earned its rightful place of respect and honor among its undead brethren, concluding Romero's original Dead trilogy with the perfect combination of astonishing gore effects and the devastating emotional price of being alive.

Join AC and his amazing panel of guests (Kristy Jett, Michael Klug, Anna Maurya, Michelle Kisner, John McDevitt) as we honor everything that makes Day of the Dead a cult classic, four decades later.
