TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE (1983) TURNS 40!!!
Tonight we’re going to be entering a dimension of sight, of sound, of mind, as we cross over into The Twilight Zone. From 1959 to 1964, Rod Serling’s groundbreaking anthology television series held sway over the airwaves, dazzling viewers with an array of supernatural morality tales, often served up with a wingding twist ending.
After capturing the imagination of two generations via syndication, the idea of a big screen treatment eventually landed at the doorstep of golden-boy Steven Spielberg, coming off an incredible string of hits that included Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T. The Extra-terrestrial. Spielberg assembled a dream team of directors to helm four different episodes. But, of course, this is the Twilight Zone, and there was a darker twist ending lay ahead for all involved.
40 years later, AC is joined by author Dodd Alley (Gamers and Gorehounds: The Influence of Video Games on the Contemporary American Horror Film), Nile Arena (Goblin Market, Fabuloso Comedy, and the co-founder of Cicada Cinema), and Larry Sternstein (Reel Early podcast) to look back at the film itself, as well as the tragedy that has loomed large over the project for the past four decades.
