#14
Curse, The (1987) (1st viewing) d. Keith, David (USA) 92 min.

Good ol’ fashioned 80s gross outs arrive courtesy of a rogue meteorite that poisons the water of a small farm town. Watching Claude Akins get all pustuled and oozy is worth the price of admission. True Confession: I saw both the unrelated Curse II: The Bite and Curse III: Blood Sacrifice before the “original.”

#15
Demoniacs, The (1974) (1st viewing) d. Rollin, Jean (France) 95 min.

A quartet of “wreckers” (criminals who guide ships onto the rocks, then loot them) are haunted by the spirits of two young ladies they’ve recently raped and killed. Leisurely paced ghost story with some occasionally memorable visuals, including the stunner that is female wrecker JoĆ«lle Coeur. Had this one for a while, finally decided to bust it out. (Get it, Rollin fans? Get it?)

#16
Dark Places (1973) (1st viewing) d. Sharp, Don (UK ) 85 min.

Creepy haunted house flick with peerless character actor Robert Hardy as the head of an asylum who inherits a deceased patient’s family mansion. More importantly, legend tells of a fortune hidden within the stately abode, bringing money-grubbing relatives Christopher Lee and Joan Collins (and meek notary Herbert Lom) out of the woodwork. Not bad, not great. Available on YouTube.

#17
Mad Magician, The (1954) (1st viewing) d. Brahm, John (USA) 71 min.

This Vincent Price vehicle’s relative obscurity on home video is the only excuse I have for not having seen it yet. That and the apparent worldwide conspiracy to keep perpetually underrated director Brahm from ever becoming a household name. Great fun.
