KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE (1988) Blu-ray Review

Tonight we’ll be celebrating the 35th anniversary of one of the true cult hits of home video, KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE. I say home video, because even though it had a brief theatrical release, the hallowed halls of VHS are where most fans initially discovered it and where generations of subsequent aficionados have grown to love it.

Just outside the town of Crescent Cove, Mike Tobacco (Grant Cramer) and Debbie Stone (Suzanne Snyder) spot a strange glowing object falling to Earth, also witnessed by farmer Gene Green (Royal Dano), who ventures into the woods believing it to be Halley's Comet. He soon discovers mysterious clown-like aliens and a large circus tent-like structure, whose complex interior reveals it to be a spaceship.

While performing pranks and mock circus acts, the klowns begin encasing the townspeople in cotton candy cocoons using toy-like rayguns. It’s up to Mike, Debbie, and officers Dave Hanson (John Allen Nelson) and Curtis Mooney (John Vernon) to save the day and the Earth.

The brains behind this madcap tribute to such sci-fi classics as Mars Needs Women and The Blob are Stephen, Charles, and Edward Chiodo (pronounced KEE-odo), also known as The Chiodo Brothers. Graduating from their own imaginative special effects-driven home movie epics, they provided the titular monsters for 1986’s Critters, which garnered them enough goodwill to create their own alien invasion flick, chock-full of practical special effects and seasoned with a frothy mix of horror and humor that still delights audiences to this day.

Tonight, we’ll look back at the Chiodos’ groundbreaking masterpiece, both the film itself as well as Arrow Video’s stunning 2018 Blu-ray release. My guests tonight are returning MVPs Jon Kitley of Kitley’s Krypt, Ryan Olson and Jen Olson, and making his first appearance on the show, Chicago’s own Dan Kiggins.
