CREEPSHOW (1982) UHD Blu-ray Review
Creepshow (1982) d. George A. Romero (USA) (120 min)
“It’s the most fun you’ll have being scared!” So trumpeted the ads for George A. Romero’s CREEPSHOW, a live-action anthology film that echoed the pleasures found within the pages of such E.C. Comics titles as Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear, which pre-dated HBO’s series Tales from the Crypt and Romero’s own Tales from the Darkside, which premiered the following year.
With an original screenplay by Stephen King, astonishing makeup effects by Tom Savini, beautiful color-tinted cinematography by Michael Gornick, a playful malevolent musical score by John Harrison, and a marvelous ensemble of former and future stars and stalwarts (Hal Halbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, Viveca Lindfors, Fritz Weaver, Leslie Nielsen, Ed Harris, Ted Danson, E.G. Marshall, and King himself as the unlucky Jordy Verrill), it's no wonder the film has become a beloved favorite in many a horror fan's collection.
Tonight, we’ll be discussing this much beloved omnibus, as well as Shout! Factory’s recent UHD release, and we’ve assembled an impressive roster to fill out tonight’s panel: screenwriter, novelist, and musician Darren Callahan, playwright Dan Caffrey (The Loser’s Club podcast), author S.A. Bradley (Hellbent for Horror podcast, Screaming for Pleasure), writer Aaron AuBuchon (Discover the Horror podcast), and all-around horror veteran Jon Kitley (Kitley’s Krypt).
