Jon Kitley of Kitley's Krypt returns to the Doc's office to discuss dos peliculas muy bueno! The debut features from and both changed the face of Spanish horror upon their releases, and happily both have recently received Blu-ray releases, so it's high time we sat down to talk about them!
The House That Screamed (aka La Residencia) (1969) was the first Spanish horror film made for the global market, shot in English with an international cast, it was a smash at the box office and basically kicked the door open for the Spanish film industry. Writer/director Serrador (Who Can Kill a Child?) was already a huge sensation on TV with his "Stories to Keep You Awake," an anthology series akin to Alfred Hitchcock Presents or The Twilight Zone, which granted him the cache to make this lavish big screen production about mystery and murder at a German girls school. Accion Mutante (1993) is a horror action comedy sci-fi social commentary splatterfest that breaks every rule of good taste and entertains the entire time. When a terrorist group comprised of disabled and disgruntled members plots to kidnap a bakery tycoon's daughter and hold her for ransom, the stage is set for mayhem, double/triple/quadruple crosses, and a body count for the ages. Iglesia (Day of the Beast, The Last Circus, Witching and Bitching) draws inspiration from Robocop, Brazil, Ozploitation flicks, and much, much more. Now available from Synapse Video!
