2010 Civilian Views and Year End Stats!

So, having addressed the horror genre (which composed more than half the year's viewing time), I figured it only fair to give credit to the rest of the flicks. Again, all of the films listed below were encountered for the first time from January 1 to December 31, 2010 (i.e. no repeat viewings were eligible), with my top picks denoted with an asterisk.

MOST WATCHED DIRECTORS OF 2010
I didn’t really have a “project” director this year (in the past, I’ve focused on the works of folks like Alfred Hitchcock, John Waters, Russ Meyer, Terence Fisher, Robert Altman, etc. Didn’t really seem to be the case this year, although it is worth observing that notables from previous years (Argento, Castle, Corman, Cronenberg, Fulci, Hartley) appeared again this year. One might get the feeling I like these guys…

Argento, Dario (4)
Corman, Roger (4)
Needham, Hal (4)
Anderson, Brad (3)
Balagueró, Jaume (3)
Carpenter, John (3)
Castle, William (3)
Cronenberg, David (3)
de la Iglesia, Alex (3)
Fulci, Lucio (3)
Hartley, Hal (3)
Kenton, Erle C. (3)
Nolan, Christopher (3)
Winterbottom, Michael (3)

Other notable viewing stats:

• 8 Masters of Horror eps (series complete)
• All 4 Airport films in one day
• 5 lesbian vampire films in one day
• Entire Halloween series (minus Rob Zombie’s remakes) in one day
• Entire Universal Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolf Man, and Mummy series
• A film beginning with every letter of the alphabet except “Q” and “X” (have to do better next year).
• 9 documentaries
• 23 countries represented

Plus:

• 156 Twilight Zone eps (entire series)
• 45 Monty Python eps (entire series)

Finally, to fully satisfy my OCD fixations, I tallied up the 2010 views to see how things broke down in terms of which years/decades ended up being the main focus of the year’s viewing. While there was a marked (and predictable) slant towards recent films, it still turned out to be an interesting examination. I'm not sure if this means anything at all, but here's the data for your perusal.

Earliest film watched
Dracula (1931)

Top viewing year: 2009 (52)
(Not surprising, since I was either catching up with films I missed in the cinema or seeing 2009 films not yet released to video until 2010) But outside of the 2000s, it was nice to see 1973 and 1974 make strong showings with a dozen views each (and 1972 close behind at an even 10).

Longest streak of seeing at least one film from each year2010-1951 (I was rock solid from 1931 on, then hit a 5-year gap between 1946-1950)

Views Breakdown by Decade
1930s - 9
1940s - 12
1950s - 18
1960s - 26
1970s - 73
1980s - 40
1990s - 36
2000s - 124
2010s - 26

  1. Looking back over my list, I see that I managed to hit every letter of the alphabet save for "X" and "Z." (And somehow I managed to take in three "Q" films: Quadrophenia, Larry Cohen's Q and Fassbinber's Querelle.)

  2. I think I hit the entire alphabet. I made a point of ending the year with Zardoz after beginning with Avatar.

  3. Craig: I've only seen Q:THE WINGED SERPENT, but I've got the other two on the list. That should solve that problem. Now for my X film...

Dr. Morbius: You sneaky, sneaky gal. No wonder you got higher marks than me in Dr. school.

  4. Enjoy them, Aaron. Fassbinder was the director I focused on the most last year, which is why I saw ten of his films (including Berlin Alexanderplatz). I plan on topping that this year. In terms of actors, Paul Naschy probably takes the prize since I saw nine of his films.

As for your "X" film, have you ever seen The X from Outer Space? If not, it's quite a pip.
