SAWNEY: FLESH OF MAN (2012) movie review
Sawney: Flesh of Man (2012) d. Wood Jr., Ricky (UK)
Seriously, how do you screw up a perfectly solid real-life horror legend like that of the 16th century Scottish cannibal clan led by Alexander “Sawney” Bean, one that directly inspired Wes Craven’s mid-70s drive-in classic The Hills Have Eyes?
By letting writer/director Wood turn it into a modern day lamebrained amateur detective story (featuring intrepid young reporter Samuel Feeney, no less) intermixed with gruesome in-your-face exploits of generic madmen led by cackling David Hayman. Sexual violence and meaty feats may satisfy less discerning gorehounds, but I wanted a little more flesh on those old bones.
