COMMUNITY (2012) movie review

Community (2012) d. Ford, Jason (UK)

A secluded town with a dark and mysterious reputation is the site of this bizarre little curio, one that constantly surprises by refusing to follow expectations but proves equally frustrating for its overflowing WTF-factor without any rhyme or reason. A pair of student journalists infiltrates the village for a student project, but what begins like an ordinary hoodie horror nightmare quickly slips its bonds to slither freely about, with characters and circumstances defying explanation.

Elements of hallucinatory drugs, abusive parents, abusive children, cross-dressing, animal torture, feral adolescents, sexual deviance and cannibalism appear, all doused in an atmosphere of filth and corruption. This is not to say that interest is not piqued and/or maintained; just that those preferring a coherent or “logical” narrative will likely be stymied.
