100 BLOODY ACRES (2012) movie review
100 Bloody Acres (2012) d. Cairnes, Cameron / Cairnes, Colin (Australia)
While the topic of commercialized cannibalism has been around for a spell (dating back to Ted V. Mikels’ The Corpse Grinders and H.G. Lewis’ Blood Feast on into Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Motel Hell, among others), the Brothers Cairnes have entered a particularly strong candidate to the race with this Outback black comedy special.
The winners of the Slamdance Screenwriting Competition, the writing/directing duo are aided immeasurably by their winning cast, especially in the form of quibbling siblings Damon Herriman and Angus Simpson, two struggling entrepreneurs preoccupied with keeping their organic fertilizer business surviving and thriving by finding just the right warm-blooded ingredients to toss (literally) into the mix. A traveling trio of music festival-bound teens end up on the chopping block, but when meeker Morgan brother Herriman falls for the comely charms of Anna McGahan, things get a little dicey and slicey.
Ozploitation royalty John Jarratt makes a tremendously welcome cameo, and the latter reel raunchy surprises doled out by Chrissie Page are worth the price of admission alone. Recommended.
