Pyx, The (1973) (1st viewing) d. Hart, Harvey (Canada) 105 min.
Karen Black plays a prostitute who unwittingly gets offed by a human sacrificing devil cult – and that’s not a spoiler, as the film opens with hard-nosed detective Christopher Plummer investigating her death. A peculiar flick, one that follows dual narrative tracks of Plummer’s tracking of leads intermixed with Black’s final hours (occasionally backed by tunes composed and sung by the actress herself), concluding with a rather muted climax.
Hold That Ghost (1941) (1st viewing) d. Lubin, Arthur (USA) 86 min.
I haven’t revisited the “Abbott & Costello Meets the Universal Monsters” series in quite a well, but I gotta say, I find their brand of comedy increasingly tiresome. There was a time when these guys were the greatest comedy team in the world? Really? Anyway, the slender plot has Bud and Lou inheriting a deceased gangster’s hideaway where they end up spending a dark n’ stormy night with Joan Davis, Evelyn Ankers and Richard Carlson. So-so, with very limited comic mileage and musical numbers by the Andrews Sisters bookending the affair.
Horror at 37,000 Feet (1973) (1st viewing) d. Rich, David Lowell (USA) 73 min.
Ah, that blessed YouTube. Been hearing about this TV movie for decades, sporting the cast of second-tier headliners Chuck Connors, Buddy Ebsen and William Shatner aboard a cursed airliner carrying a cargo of a cursed altar from an ancient abbey. Lots o’ drama of the “melo” variety, with a couple nifty little freezy demon scenes, and while it doesn’t really pack a lot of frights, its silly energy and brief running time should keep your eyes off the clock.
